Note
This is an optional offering. Once deployed, users are responsible for its maintenance and updates. Feel free to ask for feedback in the #peer-support channel on EWC RocketChat.

EUMETCast is EUMETSAT’s primary dissemination mechanism for the near-real-time delivery of satellite data. EUMETCast serves data through two complementary delivery systems: EUMETCast Satellite and EUMETCast Terrestrial.

Terrestrial services for data distribution, available and supported, include:

Terrestrial ServiceTotal Bandwidth (Mbps)DataDefault
ter-1240EPS, MSG, Sentinel-3A/B, Sentinel-5P, Third Party data, MTGyes
ter-2168Sentinel-6 data
ter-3230Sentinel-5P L1B, Sentinel-3A/B OLCI L1 FR, Sentinel-3A/B SLSTR L1B, FY3 HIRAS, FY4 GIIRS, GOSAT, MTG HRFI-FD (4 high-res full-disk bands)

Tip

Additional terrestrial services for data distribution will be created in the future for various missions. If unsure of which services your credentials grant you access to, please contact the EUMETSAT User Helpdesk (ops@eumetsat.int).

EUMETCast Terrestrial over AMT can serve any user hosted on the EUMETSAT side of the EWCnetwork, regardless of native multicast connectivity, but provided UDP traffic is allowed on port 2268. The encapsulated data can travel via via GEANT network or the commercial internet.

...

However, note that for the best performance and experience we recommend its deployment on the EUMETSAT side of the EWC.

How to provision EUMETCast Terrestial on AMT

Tip

If provisioning after October of 2025, we recommend deploying based on the community hub, to benefit form upcoming features or fixes.

Pre-requisites

Tellicast License

  1. Register a user account on

Table of Contents

Pre-requisite

  1. You need to register to theEUMETSAT User Portal
  2. Subscribe to the service and data for EUMETCast Terrestrial (you have to for EUMETCast Terrestria
    • Ensure you select at least one EKU
but this will be discarded after raising the ticket to ops@eumetsat.int as part of point 3)
    • (temporal quota allocation)
  3. Request a EUMETCast Terrestrial user key Request EUMETCast Terrestrial credentials for access from the EWC. You have to write to (Helpdesk) with you username from EUMETSAT User Portal.

Once you have the following parameters, you can proceed to the next steps.

...

provided by the helpdesk. (opening a ticket and request  EUMETCast Terrestrial credentials for access from the EWC)

    • ), making sure to provide them your EUMETSAT User Portal username alongside your request

Upon completion of the above steps, you should have the following credentials at hand:

NameDescription
usernameTellicast license user identifier, Equivalent to your EUMETSAT User Portal username.
userkey

Tellicast license activation key (i.e. the user key you obtained via from EUMETSAT Helpdesk).

Security Group

Tip

You may create security groups either via Morpheus UI settings OR via Community Hub Item deployment.

Create a designated security group with a descriptive name (e.g. "eumetcast" ) and add to it the following rules:

NameDirectionRule TypeProtocolPort RangeSource TypeSourceDestination TypeDestination Port Range

Create security group

Note:   if you already have this security group please skip to ProvisiontheclientVM.

Once you enter your tenancy:

  1. Go to Infrastructure → Network

2. Go to Security Group tab and click the add button:

3. Assign eumetcast name to the security group and hit save:

In the scoped cloud select your tenancy from the list. If you leave All, the security group cannot be assigned to VMs.

4. Click on the new security group to access it

5. Click on the 'Add rule' button to create a new rule

Now you are ready to provision the client!

Deployment based on the EWC Community Hub

Deployment via Morpheus UI (deprecated)

Warning

This method of deployment is deprecated, and kept in documentation only as reference for EUMETSAT tenancies that relied on it prior to October of 2025.

3. Select name for your VM : (e.g. eumetcast-client)

4. Use the following specifications for the provisioning of the client:

10. Enable ACKs EUMETCast Terrestrial on AMT - How to enable ACKs

11. (Optional) Enable ssh access to the VM, by browsing the Morpheus UI Add the security group ssh-internal by going to your eumetcast VM → Network → Security Group → Edit Security Group → add ssh-internal.

Warning

If you want to login to the machine please add also a security group for internal network (ssh-internal) even if there is a public IP! This is for security reasons after public IP was required for the eumetcast machine.

In other words, if you want to login to the machine you need to first login to a machine in the EWC (for example a proxy or one machine with the security group that allow ssh 22 from external network) and then login using the internal IP of the eumetcast machine, not the public IP, because it won't work otherwise.

You can find the internal IP of the machine going to Morpheus → eumetcast instance/VM → select Tab Network for the machine and look at Interfaces, as shown below:

Info

Adding the ssh-internal  security group implies your VM is only reachable via ssh from other VMs within the same network, and that you require ssh tunneling to connect. See How to Connect to a VM Hidden Behind the SSH Bastion for an example on to achieve a secure connection.

Once the service is provisioned, the user will start to receive their subscribed data on their VM (stored by default in /root/data/eumetcast/ but can be changed in the /etc/cast-client-channels_ter-1.ini file).

...

Note that all data is deleted 5 minutes after retrieval by default, A crontab is automatically activated in order to prevent the build-up of data on the machine

...

. To learn how you can modify this behavior, checkout EUMETCast Terrestrial on AMT - How to modify the time to live of the data
