Warning

Please note:

  • Users getting data from the CAMS_GFAS folder: from 04 December 2025 the GFAS 1.2 data will be no longer available. It will be replaced with the new GFAS hourly 1.4.2 data.
  • User may access the GFAS hourly 1.4.2 test data before the implementation date from the CAMS_GFAS_TEST folder. This delivery will stop soon after 4 December.
  • The CAMS_GFAS_HOURLY folder will continue to give access to the GFAS hourly 1.4.1 data while MODIS data is available. However, users are encouraged to migrate to the CAMS_GFAS folder to get access to the new hourly 1.4.2 GFAS version from 4 December.

Scope

The ECMWF data portal (aux.ecmwf.int; SFTP/FTP/HTTPS data access) provides provides access to real-time daily and hourly data from the CAMS Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) . Daily data are GFAS version 1.2 and hourly data are GFAS version 14.2. GFAS hourly 1.4.1 data will be available while MODIS data is available, after access will stop.

The description documentation of GFAS v1.4.2 can be found found here

File naming convention

The CAMS_GFAS file naming convention is based on WMO guidelines as follows:

z_cams_c_ecmf_yyyymmdd000_vvvv_tt_lt_param.[grib|nc]

Where:

...

is the parameter short name as defined here

...

grib, nc

...

The and CAMS_GFAS_HOURLY file naming convention is based on WMO guidelines as follows:

z_cams_c_ecmf_yyyymmddhhmm_vvvv_tt_lt_sss_param.[grib|nc]

...

The datasets are grouped by type of product (here only analysis, an), level type (here only surface parameter, sfc), by step or forecast range and range and by parameter.

CAMS_GFAS Example:

z_cams_c_ecmf_20201022000_gfas_an_sfc_co2fire.grib contains the average analysis field of biomass burning emissions of CO2 for 22nd October 2020 (valid from 00 UTC on 22nd to 00 UTC on 23rd).

CAMS_GFAS_HOURLY Example:

z_cams_c_ecmf_202012280800_gfas_an_sfc_024_co2fire.grib contains 24-hour average analysis field of biomass burning emissions of CO2 on 28th December 2020 (valid from 08 UTC on 28th to 08 UTC on 29th).

z_cams_c_ecmf_202012290700_gfas_an_sfc_001_co2fire.grib contains hourly analysis field of biomass burning emissions of CO2 on 29th December 2020 valid at 07 UTC.

Similar example applies also to CAMS_GFAS_HOURLY.

Data availability

Hourly fields data are produced at about 7.5 hours after their valid time.

24-hour rolling average fields are produced at about 1 day + 6.5 hours after their valid time.

Data might be available earlier but it is not guaranteed.

The latest forecasts are normally available by 06:00 UTC. After the data transfer to the sftp server is completed a , the relevant manifest file is uploaded:

z_cams_c_ecmf_yyyymmddhhmmss_gfas_024.manifest

z_cams_c_ecmf_yyyymmddhhmmss_gfas_001.manifest

This is a These are text file which contains contain the list of all the files and is are uploaded only when all the data is are available.

List of available parameters
